18th Annual WYTRANS Conference and Bus Roadeo

WYTRANS Conference Training Schedule
WYTRANS Conference participants can benefit from three days of training sessions at the 18th Annual WYTRANS Conference and Bus Roadeo, June 21-24, in Riverton, Wyoming. The conference theme is “Rendezvous Carnival.”
Pre-conference training will begin on Wednesday, June 22, with CTAA’s PASS (Passenger Service and Safety Certification) for new drivers and escorts. The two-day PASS course covers driver sensitivity and teaches drivers to be more in tune with passenger needs. ADA requirements, emergency evacuation procedures, and much more is taught in this hands-on class. WYTRANS Trainer Renae Jording from Cheyenne Transit will be the instructor.
Full conference activities begin Thursday morning. Thursday classes include the continuation of the beginning PASS class, a PASS recertification class, and a six-hour Safe Driver course. Marge Cole and Sean Solan will facilitate a Drug and Alcohol workshop for supervisors and review new FTA requirements. Marge attended the FTA Drug and Alcohol National Conference, March 20-21, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Marge said that overall, the conference was very worthwhile. Some of the sessions included Best Practices for New Drug and Alcohol Managers; Record Collection and Management; Testing Thresholds and Criteria for Post-Accident and Reasonable Suspicion Decision Making; Prescription and Over the Counter Drug Industry Best Practices; Compliance with the Audit Process; What Happens During a Collection and Breath Alcohol Test; and FTA Drug and Alcohol Program Cost Benefit Analysis.
An FTA auditor reviewed the drug and alcohol policies. CATC’s Drug and Alcohol Policy passed

with a few minor clarifications required. Marge said this was especially helpful since no one from FTA has actually reviewed the policy since the audit. The most helpful tool provided was a CD titled Drug and Alcohol Compliance Program. It is a wealth of information for getting a policy in place, doing it the right way, and staying in compliance. If you attend the Drug and Alcohol Workshop at the WYTRANS Conference in Riverton, you will be given a copy to take home.
Thursday afternoon WYTRANS Trainer Faye Nash and Licensed Therapist Johnna Nunez from Fremont Counseling will present “Dealing with Difficult Clients.” This session will be helpful for managers, drivers, dispatchers, and anyone who works with the public. Faye will give tips on what to do when a passenger is not a perfect angel. Attendees will receive tools on how to deal with that not-so-perfect passenger and be a professional at the same time.
Johnna will help managers and drivers to understand what some mental health issues look like in terms of symptoms and behaviors. She will bring case studies and involve participants in role-playing to solidify the information presented and show people how to be empathetic yet not enabling.
The PASS Recertification Course is a half-day refresher for drivers who took the two-day class three years ago and now must recertify. Rod Slocum from Thermopolis and Bob Buckardt from Laramie, will be the instructors. The Safe Driver course was designed by WYTRANS Trainers specifically for transit drivers. This class is for first-time participants and/or those needing to be recertified. Rod Slocum will teach the Thursday Safe Driver class and Bob Buckardt will be the instructor for Friday’s Safe Driver course.
